Dallas Cowboys NFL Draft strategy DALLAS - Last year,Jeremy Hill Jersey when the Cowboys spent a third-round pick on Florida offensive tackle Chaz Green, the response from Cowboys Nation was confusion. "Why would Dallas spend a premium pick on an offensive lineman," many of us asked, "when they already had what was widely held to be the league's best offensive line?" The answer—as it is with almost all organizational decisions in the NFL—is made clearer when we "follow the money." As a way of explanation, allow me a brief history lesson. In the years following Jason Garrett's move into the head coach's office, the Cowboys labored to get out from underneath a slew of bloated veteran contracts that they accumulated trying to keep Bill Parcells's core together from 2007-'10. The overhaul took several seasons to execute; in the 2011 offseason,Daryl Washington Jersey they released veterans Leonard Davis, Andre Gurode, Marc Colombo, Marion Barber, and Roy E. Williams. In 2012, the likes of Kyle Kosier and Terence Newman were released. In 2013, it was Dan Connor and Gerald Sensabaugh. The following season,C.J. Anderson Jersey DeMarcus Ware and Miles Austin were shown the door. The players jettisoned by the Cowboys during that four-year period had two things in common: a big contract and a declining skillset. The Garrett mantra, as has been well documented, has been to get younger and cheaper. What this requires, in an ideal world, is that the team drafts a replacement before it gets rid of the veteran who possesses the nasty big-money-declining skills combo. In turn, this requires that finding these younger replacements be a critical part of the team's draft strategy. And it appears that the Cowboys have been doing exactly that.Darren McFadden Jersey In the 2011 draft which, you might recall, happened before free agency due to the labor dispute and lockout, the Cowboys drafted replacements for all the players they had decided to cut: Roy Williams was replaced by Dwayne Harris; DeMarco Murray was tabbed to replace Marion Barber; Leonard Davis and Marc Columbo were replaced by David Arkin and Tyron Smith, respectively. And, finally, during camp, Andre Gurode was let go and his spot was taken by seventh-rounder Bill Nagy. Oh, and veteran kicker Kris Brown was released to make room for a little-known UDFA kicker named Dan Bailey.Andre Williams Jersey In 2012 and '13, natural roster turnover dictated that they turn to free agency to secure younger (if not cheaper) replacements for departed vets. In 2012, Kyle Kosier (Mackenzie Bernadeau and Nate Livings were both signed before Kosier was cut) and Brandon Carr was inked to a deal the day after Terrence Newman was released, suggesting that the Carr deal was in place enough to warrant the move. In 2013, Dan Connor, Gerald Sensabaugh and the aforementioned Livings were cut, since their pricey services were no longer required. These vets could be cut because the team had found younger, cheaper (and,Julius Peppers Jersey the team felt, better) models: Bruce Carter (2011 draft), Matt Johnson (2012) and Ronald Leary (2012 UDFA). As this suggests, 2013 was the offseason when the team began to get ahead of its bad contracts and, rather than replacing veterans they needed to release, they began to use the draft to acquire replacements a year in advance. One benefit of such a practice is that it allows the newly drafted player a year of seasoning before assuming the starting role. We saw this with Terrance Williams in 2013; he was able to start slowly, serving an apprenticeship behind Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, then playing in multiple WR sets,Stephen Hill Jersey then rotating in with Austin, and, finally, assuming the starting role as the season progressed. When the Cowboys released Austin at the end of the year, T-Will was ready to don the starter's mantle. In the 2013 draft, many fans were puzzled by the acquisition of Williams, much as they were by the move to draft Chaz Green in 2015. But both moves make sense if we just follow the money. When trying to divine a team's global draft plan,Jacoby Brissett Jersey it’s paramount to look at two categories of player contracts: those the team needs to get off the books because they are paying too much for a declining (see: 29 or older) player, and those that will expire at the end of the following season. Thanks to outstanding recent cap management, the Cowboys no longer have contracts from the first category on their books. Consider this: in 2012, the year the Cowboys began to release aging vets, they paid more than $22 million in dead money to players no longer on the team. That total fluctuated between $17 million and $27.5 million in 2013-15. Thus far, the dead money on the 2016 cap is a paltry $900,Thomas Rawls Jersey000. Not only has Dallas gotten out from under bad contracts but, thanks to Stephen Jones, only gives big money to its own cornerstone players, guys like Dez Bryant. Other than Brandon Carr, there are no bad contracts they would like to get off their books. A quick perusal of this list shows some positions where more than one player has an expiring contract: wide receiver (2); running back (2); linebacker (2); cornerback (2); and safety (3). Each of these includes a starter. With that in mind, if the Cowboys are to avoid either paying top dollar for starter-quality replacements next or being forced to draft specific positions next offseason,DeAngelo Williams Jersey and then start rookies at those positions, they will have to find replacements in the upcoming draft. The obvious positions of need are quarterback (where they need more than a year to groom Tony Romo's replacement) and defensive line, where another talented player or two will help Rod Marinelli's rotation. Beyond those, don’t be surprised when and if the Cowboys not only number running backs, wide receivers, linebackers, cornerbacks or safeties among their 30 visits, but also spend premium picks on those positions in late April.
